Living Roofs for Homes and Businesses

A green roof is a layer of plants, usually sedum, grown over a waterproof membrane. It adds insulation, slows rainwater run-off, supports wildlife and can make a flat roof far more pleasant to look at, which is why green roofs are becoming more common across Bristol and Bath.

We install green roofs in Bristol and Bath on extensions, garden rooms, garages, bike stores and commercial buildings, starting with the most important part: a sound, root-resistant waterproofing layer underneath.

Where Green Roofs Works Best

Green Roofs is a good choice for:

There are two main types. Extensive green roofs use shallow, lightweight sedum and need little maintenance. Intensive green roofs have deeper soil and larger plants, and need much more structural support. Either way, the roof structure must be checked for the extra weight, especially when wet. Good practice is set out in the GRO Green Roof Code from the Green Roof Organisation.

Underneath, we usually use a root-resistant EPDM or single ply membrane.

Expert Advice

Extensive and Intensive Green Roofs

Extensive green roofs use a thin layer of growing medium with hardy sedum and wildflower plants. They are relatively light and need little maintenance. Intensive green roofs are deeper, can support lawns, shrubs and even trees, and need irrigation, regular maintenance and a much stronger structure. Most homes and many commercial buildings suit extensive systems.

The Layers Beneath the Plants

A green roof is built up in layers: a root-resistant waterproof membrane, a protection layer, a drainage layer that stores and releases water, a filter fleece, the growing medium and finally the plants. Outlets and edges are kept clear of vegetation so water can always drain away.

Benefits

Green roofs slow rainwater run-off, add insulation, support wildlife and protect the waterproofing beneath from UV and temperature extremes.

Green Roofs FAQs

An extensive sedum roof is relatively light, but still adds significant weight when wet. The structure should always be checked first.

Sedum roofs need little, usually a check once or twice a year to clear outlets and remove weeds.

Possibly, if the structure is strong enough and the waterproofing is sound and root resistant.

It depends on size, type and access. We provide a written quote after a survey.
